Part of Upstate Art Weekend 2026, Cal Fish shared an immersive interactive sound installation using Sounding Sound Absorbers, FM transmitters, the Dynamic Listening Instrument, and other soft sculptures made from upcycled textile and found materials.
These elements held pieces of Fish's audio archive and included interviews and field recordings taken around Kingston in 2018 as well as dynamic drones and meditative tones.
Stay Frosty featured over 30 artists sharing work around and inside of cars and hundreds of guests. Fish's installation offered an opprotunity for play, listening, and absorption.
The installation held over 4 hours of recorded audio which could be accessed and combined idiosyncratically. Below are a few audio samples offered...
JoAnn and I in the Backyard at the of the proposed Smoke Stack, 2018
Midtown Chimes + Wiggle Wiggle Tail 2018
Tributary in Tivoli 2017
Plum Gem Tones 1 + 2
^Precipitation Sound Absorbers, some with built in sounding components.
^Visitors playing with the Dynamic Listening Instrument. Sculptural buckets are used to reveal and handle sounds held latently in electromagnetic fields.
^Two pairs of collage covered speakers outlined the space. A pair of FM transmitters broadcast signals simultaneously to 88.8 MHZ which would be adjusted incidentally by the movements and bodies of visitors.
The four day installation featured live sets by Pamela & Her Sons, Music Lovers Anonymous, and Aiden Samp.
Each would be input to an FM transmitter broadcasting to nearly all components of the installation and car stereos simultaneously.
